A question about sleep

My dear sweet little punk will not nap for longer than 45 minutes for the most part. Occasionally she will surprise me, but it's usually 30-50 minutes per nap. Because of this, she seems tired every two hours or so and I swaddle her up and plop her down for another cat nap.

Is this normal? Should she be sleeping more? Sleeping less? Am I putting her down for a nap too much? She really does seem to start cranking and eye rubbing, and will resist a couple of times in the swaddle but then conks out, so I feel pretty correct in that she's tired. (She wouldn't fall asleep otherwise, would she?)

She sleeps about 11 hours through the night, solidly from about 7:30pm to 2am, and then more restlessly for the rest of the night, so from about 2am until 6am, I am patting belly, reswaddling, readjusting, patting belly, stroking cheek, trying paci, etc. And then she will nap at like: 7:30am, 10am, 12:30pm, 3pm, 5pm.

Weird, or no?

Hi! I'm a lurker. I have three kids, 4.5 years, 2.5 years and 8 weeks. (so I know a bit about sleeping three month olds). I definitely think she's getting enough sleep, but not too much. (they know whats right for them anyway) The real question is not really whether or not how she is napping is a problem for her, it's more like 'is it a problem for you'? If not, then do what you're doing. If it is, then see how it goes if you stretched out her naps a bit. If that doesn't work and you end up with a cranky screetchy baby, then go back to what she wants. She's barely just out of the newborn stage so I wouldn't worry too much about how she sleeps, unless, like I said, it's a problem for you. By the time she's six months I can almost guarantee that she'll have three naps a day and you'll forget these early stages unless someone else asks you about them.

Good luck! Your baby is beautiful.

Oh! and the best advice I ever received as a mother is this:

Nothing is a 'bad habit' unless it's not working for you.

That sort of fits here, but not really. I thought I'd pass it along to you. It gave me great comfort with my first born while I was always worried that I was making things worse for myself by creating 'bad habits'. If you don't worry about things like that, then please disregard that assvice ;-)

The way I understand it, their sleep cycle is around 45 mins long, and it cycles, so in the more awake part of sleep she must be waking up. Have you tried not going to her right away to see if she drifts back to sleep?

Thans, guys. It doesn't bother me, it just seems weird to me that she's getting sleepy so much. She hardly has time to play in between naps and feedings!

As for kewd, I do wait before going in to her. Sometimes I even wait a bit and then she starts crying and I go in and try to give her a pacifier and get her back to sleep. No go. I walk in and she starts smiling at me and kicking her legs and it's all over.

Totally normal. Squeak is 8.5 months old and still is on a 2-hour awake cycle. Sometimes we can stretch it to 2.5 or 3 hours (and sometimes he's forced to go longer because we're out or something), but pretty much he's tired 2 hours after he wakes up.

He also does the thing we call "45-minute-ing" where he'll wake up at about 45 minutes. Usually we can get him to fall back asleep, but some days he's UP.

and he also does the early morning fussy thing. from about 3am-7:30 he is restless. He's been doing it forever. some nights it's better than others, but it's still there.

Seems like the punk is normal. doesn't help for your sleep deprivation, and it's hard to go out when you have to be home for a nap again, but there it is. She might sleep longer in a sling, but I recall that she hates them, so i guess you're SOL. :)
